Smart Choice Stable’s Fusaichi Red saved ground around the turn before angling out in the stretch and storming home to an impressive three and ¾ length score in the $70,000 Miss Woodford Stakes at Monmouth Park on Sunday afternoon.
Trained by George Weaver, Fusaichi Red covered the six furlongs over a fast main track in 1:10 1/5 and paid $12.20, $6.20 and $3.80 in the field of 11 3-year-old fillies. Coco’s Wildcat completed the $86.60 exacta and returned $7.20 and $4.40. It was another two lengths back to Spark, who paid $3.40 to show.
“She didn’t break well, but we were in a good spot because of the early speed,” said winning jockey Orlando Bocachica. “Going into the turn, I didn’t want to go too wide, but I wanted to give her room to run. Once we got to the middle of the stretch, she had a lot left.”
A daughter of Fusaichi Pegasus from the D’wildcat mare Gloomy I’m Knot, Fusaichi Red sports a record of 2-2-2 from six starts.
