It has been more than a half century since none of the Top 4 horses across the wire in the Kentucky Derby ran back two weeks later in the Preakness Stakes, but the absence of those well-known colts only discounts a bit from what should still be a nice betting race May 18 at Pimlico Race Course.

The winners of three automatic Preakness qualifiers -- Anothertwistafate, Alwaysmining and Laughing Fox -- will take on as many as four from the Derby in Improbable, War of Will, Bodexpress and Win Win Win.

Following news this week that Derby winner Country House would not enter the Preakness, Pimlico track operator The Stronach Group issued a statement saying "we anticipate there will be more interest from owners and trainers, who have until Wednesday, May 15 to make a final decision on whether to race."

In the meantime, check out free Brisnet past performances for those known Preakness contenders. I
n addition to providing recent running lines, Brisnet PPs rank contenders on speed and pace figures, plus detail running styles. Don't miss the ultimate comments, either, which point out key stats for each horse.

Note that all the so-called new shooters actually ran faster in their last starts than their counterparts exiting the Derby. Was the Derby a slow race, or are those colts being underrated? That's just one piece of the puzzle to consider before the third Saturday in May.
