The May 1 Kentucky Derby is now less than two weeks away and the field is taking shape, as several qualifying colts have opted to skip the race, while others have moved up to take their places in the field.
The current favorite for the race is Essential Quality, running for trainer Brad Cox. He comes into the race with a 5-for-5 record, including a win in the Blue Grass Stakes (G2) on April 3 at Keeneland.
The Tapit colt will face a field that will include several Grade 1 winners, among them Rock Your World, trained by John Sadler, who crossed the wire first in the April 3 Santa Anita Derby ahead of second-place Medina Spirit, also in the Run for the Roses.
Hot Rod Charlie, winner of the Louisiana Derby (G2) for trainer Doug O’Neill, also will likely be in the Derby, as will second and third place finishers Midnight Bourbon and O Besos.
Wood Memorial (G2) winner Bourbonic will be in the field for Pletcher, likely as a major long shot, and likewise for Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) winner Like the King, running for trainer Wesley Ward.
