With the Breeders' Cup Classic field coming into focus, let the handicapping begin.

Our friends at Brisnet have provided free past performances for the $6 million feature set for Nov. 2 at Santa Anita Park, where McKinzie sizes up as a tepid favorite. You can mark it early on your calendar, too: The Classic goes as Race 12 at 8:44 p.m. ET.

That means
plenty of time to sort through Brisnet's assorted handicapping tools. Among them is Prime Power, which combines factors such as speed, class and pace to rank the field.

McKinzie owns a slight Prime Power edge on this field with the 3-year-old Code of Honor, placed atop the running order in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1), certainly eligible to keep improving. Tacitus, next on the list, isn't targeting the Classic, but Bill Mott-trained stablemate Elate -- a mare taking on the boys -- is. She fits with the field based on Prime Power.

Using Brisnet's Ultimate Past Performances will also yield insights on trainers. Note that, for instance, Seeking the Soul enters off back-to-back west coast defeats. But his trainer, Dallas Stewart, strikes at 31% when saddling horses third off the layoff.

With Santa Anita playing slower since the spring, when the track came back deepened due to safety concerns in southern California, Brisnet's track bias stats may come in handy. So far at the current meet, horses with the Early (E) running style have won 50% of the races.

Running styles will be assigned to the Classic contenders later by Brisnet, but you can surmise that statistic may bode well for a speedy type like Omaha Beach if his connections enter this spot.
