Bettors nationwide made Eclipse Award winner Forte, the winner of this month’s Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes, the 3-1 favorite in pool 5 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, the pari-mutuel market conducted Friday-Sunday by Churchill Downs.
At the same time, Honeybee (G3) winner Wet Paint was established as the 7-2 favorite in the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager, the only chance for the public to bet into a pari-mutuel pool weeks ahead of the Grade 1 race for 3-year-old fillies.
From the $250,906 bet into the Derby pool that included 39 individual horses and a mutuel field of all other 3-year-olds, Forte attracted $47,209.79 and will pay $8.76 for a $2 win ticket if he should finish first in the May 6 running of the Derby.
By comparison, $9,883 were bet into the Oaks pool.
Wet Paint and Forte also were made the favorite in the Derby-Oaks double. If they both win May 5 and 6, a $2 win ticket would pay $17.00. The pool for the double totaled $67,712.
