Former Poker Player Wins $10K DerbyWars Game

DerbyWars $10,000 Saturday Game
The latest DerbyWars $10,000 Saturday game winner went from playing the cards to the ponies - and is now $5,000 richer!

Josh Taylor of The Colony, Texas, started playing DerbyWars November 19 as "Orca80" on the gameboards. Within 24 hours, he had qualified for his first $10K game.

"It reminds me of the good ol' online poker days, where you could play tournaments every night," said Taylor.

Taylor has shown up in several $10K and $5K High Stakes games since, working his way up the leaderboard with each try, taking down smaller $1,000 games all along the way.

Josh Taylor $10K SAT DerbyWars winning picksIn the Jan. 11 game, Taylor started off with short-priced horses early in the game, but as the action switched to Santa Anita, his score went up with his horses' odds! He scored in the final 4 races of the day, including a $15.50 place pick in Majestic Harbor and the aptly-named $17.20 winner Home Run Kitten in the finale! His final score was $78, $1.60 more than his closest rival.

"This time I trusted my picks, didn't panic, and chipped away at the lead little by little. You don't have to make it up all on one race! Took me a while to learn that lesson," he said. "Find all the horses that have a live shot at odd 4-1 to 10-1...look for a situation where a horse hasn't tried something, you get great odds usually."

Runner-up with $76.20 was Robert Lipp (drlipp), and Bobby Brendler (roundmann) finished third with $63.70.

"I first got hooked on horses at Del Mar, where I lived for 5 years," he said. "Didn't know anything about the sport, but being a math guy I would sit by a machine and wait for the very last second to bet. Whatever horses' odds dropped the most in the last 3 minutes I would bet.  Figured someone did their homework so I would piggyback. This method wasn't to profitable! Since them I have read many books and got advice from anyone willing to give it. It reminds me a ton of poker: One day you have it figured out, the next you feel like a beginner."

In addition to the top prizemoney, Taylor also qualified for the upcoming $50,000 Game on Feb. 8, for a total haul of $5,000!
