NYRA suspended Baffert last year after the trainer revealed that 2021 Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit failed a post-race drug test. Baffert’s attorneys fought that suspension in federal court and secured an injunction halting it on due process grounds.
But the trainer's attempts to stop or delay a hearing in the matter failed, and the hearing began Monday with attorneys for each party trading shots. (Read more here.) On Tuesday, NYRA attorneys tried to prove that Baffert's medication violations could have a major impact on public perception of racing. Baffert's team pushed back by saying that the embattled trainer has been good for racing throughout his career.
