First Look: Full plate of stakes is on offer at 3 tracks

Churchill Downs has a full menu for Thanksgiving, with seven stakes over the four-day holiday weekend. Two of those events are points qualifiers for the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks, and First Mission will try to make it four wins in a row in the Grade 2 Clark Stakes.

Aqueduct and Del Mar also have graded stakes this weekend. Here’s a look at the likely fields.

Thursday

Falls City (G3), Churchill Downs, 1 1/8 miles, fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Xigera is coming off a win in the Mother Goose (G2) and is 4-for-5 this year. Trainer Philip Bauer also entered Skratch Kat, who has won his last two starts, both in optional-claiming allowance races. Hidden Connection also was entered in the Chilukki, finishing last of eight in that race on Saturday.

Cardinal (G3), Churchill Downs, 1 1/8 miles (turf), fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Lovely Princess started the year with a win and three seconds and was fourth last out in the Dowager (G3). Juncture is 1-for-5 for Brad Cox this year after racing in England and Ireland the previous two years. Walkathon was off for 15 months after winning last year’s Regret (G3) and has finished seventh and third in two starts since August.

Francesco Clemente has had two U.S. starts after moving from the U.K., winning an allowance last out at Aqueduct. Lukka, making his first U.S. start, has finished in the money in all nine of his starts in Chile, and his last two races were Group 1 wins. Stretch Ride is 2-for-2 after winning his debut at Churchill then scoring at this distance at Keeneland. After winning his debut at Saratoga, Risk It was second in the Iroquois (G3) last out. Real Men Violin had three seconds and a third, with starts on turf and dirt, before breaking his maiden last out at a mile on Churchill’s dirt track.

Hong Kong Harry was 0-for-3 this spring before taking a four-month break and returning to win the City of Hope (G2) on Sept. 9 over a couple of others possible here. War at Sea, possible both here and in the Native Dancer (G3) on Sunday, got his first win of the year last out in the Golden Gate Handicap (G3). Easter returned from a nine-month break to post a record of 6: 3-1-1 this year, winning the black-type Lure last out. Formerly trained by Graham Motion, he was entered by Phil D’Amato.
