First Look: Derby, Oaks preps lead packed stakes calendar

It’s a packed weekend for racing, with four Kentucky Derby points preps from coast to coast and three for the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks.

The storylines include the 2023 debut of Forte in the Fountain of Youth (G2) and Red Carpet Ready’s attempt to remain undefeated in the Davona Dale (G3).

In all, 14 graded stakes are on the calendar for Saturday and two on Sunday. Here’s an early look at the fields.

Kentucky Derby points preps – Saturday

Fountain of Youth (G2), Gulfstream Park, 1 1/16 miles, 3-year-olds, 50-20-15-10-5 points

Forte isn’t the only one making his 2023 debut. Blazing Sevens, fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile won by Forte and winner of the Champagne (G1), also gets his first start of the year. Five return here from the Holy Bull (G3), including winner Rocket Can and runner-up Shadow Dragon. General Jim is coming off a win in the Swale (G3).

Tim Yakteen's entries include colts formerly trained by Bob Baffert: Hejazi, National Treasure, Mr Fisk and Fort Bragg. Hejazai broke his maiden last out after finishing third in the American Pharoah (G1) behind stablemates Cave Rock and National Treasure. The latter went on to finish third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and Sham (G3). Practical Move won the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2) last out for Yakteen, with Fort Bragg coming in third. Chase the Chaos returns to dirt and tries his first graded stakes after winning the El Camino Real Derby.
