Finnick the Fierce crossed the wire second, but was awarded the victory in a 1 1/16-miles allowance race for 3-year-olds at Oaklawn Park on Saturday after stewards disqualified Winning Impression for interference in deep stretch.
In the final 100 yards of Oaklawn's eighth race, Winning Impression -- a 12-1 shot for trainer Dallas Stewart -- appeared to move in under jockey Joe Rocco Jr. as odds-on favorite Answer In with Joe Talamo aboard was trying to split horses.
Talamo pulled up Answer In momentarily as a result and the pair wound up crossing the wire fifth.
Stewards ruled the interference denied Answer In a better placing and Winning Impression was taken down. The revised order of finish was officially Finnick the Fierce, General Trev and Adhhar, with Answer In finishing off the board in fourth place.
Winning Impression was placed fifth following the disqualification.
Finnick the Fierce, a 3-year-old Dialed In gelding collected his second career victory in six career starts. He was on the “Road to the 2020 Kentucky Derby” trail earlier this year, finishing fourth in Fair Grounds’ Lecomte (G3), then subsequently seventh in one division of the Risen Star (G2).
Owned by Arnaldo Monge and trainer Rey Hernandez, Finnick the Fierce earned $36,600 for his connections.
