Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer will have a pair of representatives Saturday – Broken Sword and Curvy Cat – as he seeks his third Bayakoa win in four years. He won with Washington Bridge in 2010 and Lady of Fifty 12 months ago.

Broken Sword returns to Southern California for the first time since Aug. 21 for a partnership that includes Mark DeDomenico LLC, George Todaro and Hollendorfer.

A 3-year-old daughter of Broken Vow and the Volksraad mare Katana, Broken Sword has won twice in seven races and earned $66,660. She comes off a 5 ½ length victory as the favorite in an optional claimer over the Tapeta surface Nov. 10 at Golden Gate Fields.

Curvy Cat will be making her first start around two turns since finishing third behind stablemate Snow Fall and Distracting in the Paseana Handicap Jan. 13 at Santa Anita.

Owned by breeders Tom and Debi Stull’s Tommy Town Thoroughbreds, the 4-year-old Ministers Wild Cat filly and the Distorted Humor mare Curvy Girl has won seven of 21 and earned $292,425.

Baffert, who won the 2011 Bayakoa with Ellafitz, will start Fiftyshadesofhay for owners Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman.

The 3-year-old daughter of Pulpit and the Real Quiet mare Quiet Kim has won four of 12 and banked $754,297.

A graded stakes winner at three different tracks – Santa Ysabel at Santa Anita, Black Eyed Susan at Pimlico and Iowa Oaks at Prairie Meadows – Fiftyshadesofhay has been away since finishing third at 2-5 over a sloppy track in the Grade II Indiana Oaks Oct. 5 at Indiana Downs.

Bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm, LLC, Fiftyshadesofhay is 1-for-1 over Cushion Track. She broke her maiden by 3 ¼ lengths at the Bayakoa distance Nov. 22, 2012.

Customer Base returns to a synthetic surface for the first time since trailing in the 2012 Hollywood Oaks.

Trained by Tom Proctor for Glen Hill Farm, the 4-year-old daughter of Lemon Drop Kid and the Tale of the Cat mare Little Cat Feet has four wins in 17 attempts and a bankroll of $262,182.

Winner of the Grade III Senorita Stakes over the Betfair Hollywood Park turf course in her U.S. debut May 11, Charlie Em exits a third-place finish in the Grade III Autumn Miss Stakes Oct. 26 at Santa Anita.

Owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and trained by Paddy Gallagher, the 3-year-old daughter of Kheleyf and the Pivotal mare Miss Meggie has won four of 14 and earned $111,928.

She’s run twice over synthetic – winning at Wolverhampton Aug.31, 2012 and finishing third behind 2013 Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Beholder and Wittgenstein in the Torrey Pines Stakes Sept. 1 at Del Mar.

Warren’s Veneda steps into open company in search of her third win in a row for owner-breeder Benjamin C. Warren and trainer Craig Lewis.

A 3-year-old Affirmative filly out of the Flying Continental mare More Cal Bread, Warren’s Veneda followed a 7 ¼ length romp in an optional claimer Oct. 13 with a three-quarters of a length victory over Curvy Cat as the 13-10 favorite in the Cat’s Cradle Handicap Nov. 17.

Worse than third only twice in 10 starts, Warren’s Veneda, who has won five times, has banked $282,064.

Hall of Fame trainer Ron McAnally will be represented by Charm the Maker, a 4-year-old Empire Maker filly out of the Giant’s Causeway mare Charm the Giant he owns and bred with wife Debbie.

Charm the Maker, whose only victory at Betfair Hollywood Park came in the 2011 Sharp Cat Stakes, has three wins in 15 starts and a bankroll of $337,990.

A victory by Charm the Maker would be a record-tying fifth in the Bayakoa for McAnally. He won with Happy Guess (1981), Paseana (1991) and Brought to Mind (1992) when the race was called the Silver Belles Handicap and again in 1996 with Listening.

The champion older filly or mare of 1989 and 1990 for McAnally, Bayakoa is a member of racing’s Hall of Fame and finished her career with 21 victories and earnings of more than $2.81 million.

John Shirreffs holds the Bayakoa record. He won his fifth in 2009 with Zardana.

Champagneandcaviar will try a surface switch after posting a 57-1 shocker Oct. 11 on the Santa Anita turf in her first race for trainer Gary Mandella.

The win was the fourth in 16 starts for the 4-year-old Van Nistelrooy filly and pushed her earnings to $123,471. Out of the Carson City mare Dance With Carson, Champagneandcaviar is owned by Fleur De Lis Stable, LLC.

Spellbound will make her first appearance since finishing fourth in the Grade I Santa Anita Oaks April 6.

Owned by Ramona Bass, Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider and trained by Hall of Famer Richard Mandella, the 3-year-old Bernardini filly out of the Tale of the Cat mare Layreebelle has won twice in six starts and earned $88,500. She has yet to compete at Betfair Hollywood Park.

Magic Union, who is 1-for-1 over synthetic, switches surfaces after finishing sixth of seven in the restricted Swingtime Stakes on the Santa Anita turf Oct. 5.

Trained by John Sadler for Hronis Racing LLC, the 3-year-old Dixie Union filly out of the Pleasant Colony mare won an optional claimer by 1 ¼ lengths over the Polytrack at Del Mar Aug. 25 in her first race for her current connections.
