In the first race run over Woodbine’s turf course following a heavy downpour Sunday afternoon, Field of Courage scored a major upset in the Grade 2, $250,000 Nearctic Stakes.
The 5-year-old gelding -- running at 40-1 -- emerged from a three-wide battle in the stretch to give trainer Mark Casse his first victory in the stakes run on the Pattison Canadian International undercard.
Top choices Cotai Glory (5-2) and White Flag (9-5) finished 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in the six-furlong test.
Field of Courage’s final time was 1:12.07 under jockey Luis Contreras. The son of Marchfield paid $82.70 in his first try at a graded stakes.
