Drosselmeyer Takes Off in Breeders' Cup Classic

Drosselmeyer and Mike Smith came from the clouds to snatch victory away from Chantal Sutherland and Game On Dude in Saturday's Breeders' Cup Classic at Churchill Downs.

Game On Dude controlled the pace under Sutherland through reasonable fractions of :23.67, :47.84, and 1:12.82. Uncle Mo was in hot pursuit followed by Stay Thirsty, So You Think, and To Honor and Serve.

At the one mile marker, it was still Game On Dude by a 1/2 length with Drosselmeyer biding his time in 10th place.

A stubborn Game On Dude was back in front by a length around the far turn and heading for home. He looked like he might go all the way but Drosselmeyer was picking off horses on the outside and was bearing down on the longtime leader. The wire was quickly approaching and Drosselmeyer blew on by under a full head of steam to win by 1-1/2 lengths.

Game On Dude held off the late charge of Ruler On Ice with Havre de Grace completing the superfecta.

Flat Out was next, followed by So You Think, To Honor And Serve, Ice Box, Rattlesnake Bridge, Uncle Mo, Stay Thirsty, and Headache.

Drosselmeyer, owned by WinStar Farm and trained by Bill Mott, stopped the clock in 2:04.27 and paid $31.40.

Hey Icy it wasn't too long ago when you declared Stay Thirsty the best 3 year old in the land. What happened maybe Stay Thirsty got stung in the package by a big hornet and didn't feel quite like the best best 3 year old in the land. Now don't take offense Icy. We never know how things will turn out when horses are involved.
Good thing Mo was there or this would definitely be the worst group of 3yos EVER! 118
Invasor ,Curlin,Blame, A AleX, All would have DOMINATED this group. 204+ Whats up with that
facts.....turf horses usually make good transition to synth. surfaces. see gio ponti, acclamation, animal kingdom.
t_vic.....horses like dross always run to the pace, (see his belmont win), then close like a runaway locomotive. mike smith does well in big races with those kinds of horses.
if anything the track was more ameable to the front end than the deep mover
pace horse? sure they always hang back to 9th and then come like gnagbusters in both this and the Jockey Club Gold Cup
These guys would have been lucky to crack the Superfecta against Invasor and Bernardini.
icy.....dross is a pace horse, and the pace of this race wasn't any great shakes. he was close to the back of the pack until the 2nd turn, and then turned it on. cd is a notoriously deep track.
took a pace collapse to get that one there...Only Chantel's horse had the fortitude Saturday
Drosselmeyer is one of the nicest looking horses I've ever seen he just can't run very fast, 2:04.1 c,mon.
I don't think this was a pitiful group. I mean come on, no way in hell So You Think is a pitiful racehorse, he's world class. Yes I know he finished off the board, but not a terrible performance for his first on dirt. Really just a tad lacking in starpower, plus the final result of the Classic basically summed up what a hodgepodge year it was for American horses, where just about every major race was taken by a different outsider, only fitting the crowning event follow suit.
An amazing race with amazing horses, amazing jockeys, and amazing connections. None of these horses were pitiful Steve, they were all amazing, hence the reason they were all loaded into that starting gate. They all had their own amazing races and stunned us all. Though I am not a fan, Havre de Grace ran a good race, but it just wasn't her day, it was Drosselmeyer's. Game On Dude ran an amazing race as well, so did Ruler on Ice, this race was redemption for Mike Smith, truly, and he deserves every bit of praise everyone gives him for his perfect ride. I am proud to say that he is the greatest jockey ever in my eyes and I truly do not care what anyone else says. Even though sometimes he can't always get the greatest mounts during slow points in the racing season and he loses claimers and such, but when it matters, he pulls through. I will never forget this race which brought me to my feet, screaming and jumping up and down, it was truly one to remember.
Steve please explain how the 09 BCC was one of the strongest ever? That confuses me a bit? Last I checked it consisted of turf/dirt horses. And very few winners of a 1 1/4 on synthetics. Please explain how that is great as it seems to have gone over my head?
steve......i wouldn't go as far as saying that this is a pitiful group. this was a very good collection of horse, though there were no zenyattas or blames in it. drosselmeyer far from the most talented horse, but he proved he is the guttiest, and that final 16th close he put on to catch a very good game on dude, was very impressive to me.
All this result does is give me a greater appreciation for Zenyatta. The fact that she's the only mare to finish first or second in 2 of the strongest BCCs ever speaks volumes to her greatness. Havre De Grace is good, but she had absolutely no excuse for losing to this pitiful group.
Mike smith was on the best Horse (mare) last year, and should have won. I'm very happy for him.
