In his first try around two turns since July, 2016, Natalie J. Baffert’s Dr. Dorr broke alertly from his rail post position and controlled proceedings throughout as he took Saturday’s $75,000 Santana Mile by four lengths under Joe Talamo.  Trained by Natalie’s husband, Bob Baffert, the 5-year-old Lookin At Lucky gelding got a flat mile in 1:37.07.

“Cruise control,” said Talamo.  “We didn’t have any instructions today (Baffert was away in Dubai, and his assistant, Mike Marlow handled the saddling duties).  We just figured it out.  He broke on top, relaxed down the backside and laid it down in the lane.”

A sharp half length allowance winner going 6 ½ furlongs on a wet fast track March 2, Dr. Dorr was the even money favorite in a field of four older horses and with no show wagering, paid $4.20 and $2.80.

Bred in Kentucky by Madeline Auerbach, Bob Baffert and the late actor, Jack Klugman, Dr. Dorr, who is out of the Unusual Heat mare Jax El, picked up $46,200 for the win, boosting his earnings to $168,320.  With today’s victory, he’s now 10-4-0-1.

Ridden by Drayden Van Dyke, The Lieutenant, who is a half brother to Baffert’s “A-List” Derby hopeful Justify, was in tight quarters at the rail while a joint third heading into the far turn and again turning for home, never threatened the winner while outrunning longshot Clear the Mine by a half length for second money.  Trained by Michael McCarthy, The Lieutenant was off at 7-2 and paid $3.20 to place.

“He ran great,” said Van Dyke.  “We had a little traffic trouble trying to get out and get a clear path to run in, but other than that, it set up perfect.  He had every chance.”

Ridden by Tyler Baze, Clear the Mine finished third, some nine lengths in front of Baffert’s Cat Burglar, who got a perfect stalking trip under Martin Garcia, but withered through the lane.

Fractions on the race, all set by the winner, were 24.01, 48.16, 1:12.52 and 1:24.78.
