The Derby Alumni tracker checks in with the horses who raced in the Kentucky Derby, both this year and in previous years, keeping up with what they have done since they ran for the roses.

2023 Kentucky Derby

Three 2023 Kentucky Derby runners and one scratched horse are on track to race in the Belmont Stakes on Saturday. Third-place Angel of Empire, fifth-place Hit Show and seventh-place Tapit Trice are primed for the test of the champion, in addition to scratched morning-line favorite Forte.

Raise Cain, eighth in the run for the roses this year, also was expected to enter the Belmont. But trainer Ben Colebrook will enter Raise Cain in the Matt Winn (G3) instead, preferring the new 1 1/8-mile distance at Ellis Park.

Raise Cain will run in Matt Winn instead of Belmont Stakes

In addition to Raise Cain, several others in the 2023 Kentucky Derby may enter the Matt Winn. King Russell, 15th in the Kentucky Derby, is probable. Possible horses include second-place Two Phil's, 11th-place Sun Thunder and 16th-place Verifying.

2022 Kentucky Derby

Saturday's Blame (G3) at Churchill featured several familiar faces from the 2022 Kentucky Derby. Barber Road ran fourth, and Pioneer of Medina was sixth. The real star, however, was a horse who was scratched from the 2022 Kentucky Derby, Rattle N Roll. He returned two weeks after winning the Pimlico Special (G3) and finished tenaciously to win by 1 1/4 lengths.

Classic Causeway also raced Saturday at Churchill in the Arlington (G3) on grass. He stalked the pace before flattening out to finish fourth, 2 1/4 lengths behind winner Set Piece.

Baffert taps brakes on Taiba, will not race him in Met Mile

Taiba had been pointed to Saturday's Met Mile (G1), though after a work Friday trainer Bob Baffert decided to remove him from consideration for that race and instead point him to a summer campaign at Del Mar.

2021 Kentucky Derby

Like the King returned in a conditioned allowance optional claiming race May 28 at Woodbine, going 1 1/16 miles on the grass. He tracked 3 1/2 lengths off the pace through the early stages, chased on evenly and finished fourth behind Gaston, beaten 3 1/4 lengths.

Brooklyn Strong raced May 29 in the Commentator, a New York-bred stakes at 1 1/16 miles on the Belmont dirt. He settled toward the rear and did not find a rally in the lane, finishing 11th in the field of 12. Brooklyn Strong crossed the wire 17 3/4 lengths behind New York-bred mainstay Bankit.

2020 Kentucky Derby

Major Fed made the first start of his 6-year-old season May 27 at Churchill Downs. Going a mile on the dirt against third-level allowance foes, he tracked the pace before proving no match for the leading pair and losing show late. He finished fourth, 8 1/4 lengths behind winner Three Technique.

Storm the Court, the champion juvenile male of 2019, recently returned to the work tab for the first time this year. He drilled four furlongs on May 23 at Keeneland, then worked another four there on May 31. In his last start, Storm the Court finished fifth in the Tokyo City Cup (G3) on Oct. 2.

2019 Kentucky Derby

After a winter-spring campaign at Turf Paradise, Gray Magician has begun summer racing at Canterbury Park. He returned to the track Saturday in a 6 1/2-furlong starter-optional claiming dirt sprint. He disputed a quick early pace with eventual last-place finisher Linchtown, and though he could not keep up with the late-running winner Reckoning Day, Gray Magician chased on for a clear second, 3 1/2 lengths behind the winner.
