Dennis’ Moment, owner of the best Beyer figure any 2-year-old has posted this season, will run Sept. 14 in Churchill Downs’ Grade 3, $200,000 Iroquois Stakes, Ellis Park announced Saturday on Twitter.
Ellis Park’s tweet attributed that news to Jason Loutsch of Albaugh Family Stables, which campaigns the Tiznow colt.
Albaugh Family Stables' Dennis' Moment - the electrifying 19-length maiden winner at #EllisPark under @_MIGUELMENA_ - runs next in @ChurchillDowns' 9/14 Iroquois, says @cyfanatic. The Iroquois is the first of four Breeders’ Cup Juvenile “Win and You’re In” qualifiers on the schedule.
Loutsch would later elaborate on the decision with the Ellis Park press team.
“The 2-year-old campaign and going into your 3-year-old campaign, which hopefully is what we’re on the path for, is such a long and grueling season that we think coming out of his stall where he trains and running in your backyard is a smart decision for us right now,” said said Loutsch, who co-owns Dennis’ Moment with father-in-law Dennis Albaugh and who manages the stable.
Dennis’ Moment debuted over that Churchill Downs track June 23 in a maiden special weight event but recorded a DNF after he unseated jockey Robby Albarado early in the five-furlong event.
Romans saddled Dennis’ Moment in maiden special weight company again July 27 at Ellis Park. This time, the Kentucky-bred colt not only won at seven furlongs, but vaulted himself to the top of the 2-year-old conversation with his performance.
Under jockey Miguel Mena, Dennis’ Moment “demolished the field,” in the words of the official chart. He wired the 12-horse field to win by 19 ¼ lengths and posted a 97 Beyer rating, best of any runner so far in his division.
