Problems with the new lights at Delta Downs caused the cancellation of the final six races of Friday’s night card and all of Saturday's races, according to a trainer who enters horses at the Louisiana track.

The races were called off after Its a Deal fell during the third and what turned out to be the final event Friday evening.

“It’s a new (lighting) system in,” trainer Tom Amoss said in a text message. “The riders are unhappy with it.”

Amoss said a rider told him that the new lights are “creating too many shadows on the track.”

Its a Deal eventually walked off the course, according to the Equibase chart. Jockey Jorge Guzman was in the irons. His condition is unknown.

In a Tweet on Friday night, track management referred only to “technical difficulties” that led to the cancellation.

The lights were newly installed for the 2021 season after the track’s old lights were destroyed by Hurricane Laura in 2020.

Delta Downs track announcer Don Stevens posted on social media Saturday morning that every day of racing next week will feature a post time of 1:55 p.m. EDT.

“Further info will be announced when it is available,” Stevens said in the post.

Saturday’s program at Delta was to feature 10 races, including the $100,000 Gold Cup.
