Daring Kathy Wins Photo Finish in Perfect Sting

Daring Kathy won a desperate photo finish to take her third consecutive race and seventh from ten career starts in Friday's $100,000 Perfect Sting Stakes at Belmont Park.

Making her first start with trainer Chad Brown, Daring Kathy, under Javier Castellano, broke sharply from the gate and sat in second early as an eager Miss Frost led the field through splits of 23.79 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 47.22 for the half.

Approaching the quarter pole, Daring Kathy made her move to the front and opened up daylight on her competition entering the stretch, with enough left to hold off the hard-charging favorite, Marbre Rose, as the two exchanged bobs nearing the wire. Daring Kathy completed the mile distance in 1:33.85.

"We got her a couple of months ago and thought this would be a good starting point, the mile distance and the timing of it," said Brown. "We just took the approach when we drew inside that we're going to commit and go [to the lead]. I told [jockey] Javier [Castellano] that if someone gets crazy just let them go. Miss Frost may have run off a little bit, but Javier held his spot against the fence, on or near the lead. She did the rest. She really kicked good for home and had enough to hold on. She hadn't run in a while and these other horses had, so I really think she's going to get something out of this race."

Daring Kathy returned $13.60 on a $2 win wager, and increased her earnings to $407,531.

Photo Call finished third, a half-length behind Marbre Rose, followed by Emotional Kitten, Lucknow, Patsy's Holiday, Zindaya, Invading Humor and Miss Frost.
