Collected, West Coast named 2018 Pegasus World Cup contenders

With trainer Bob Baffert’s big horse, Arrogate, retired after his run at the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Classic, there’s opportunity for a new top barn star to emerge in the upcoming Pegasus World Cup.

According to the Daily Racing Form, Collected and West Coast will take aim at the Jan. 27 Pegasus World Cup off their runner-up and third-place finishes, respectively, in Saturday’s Classic at Del Mar.

They’ll go up against top competition again, as Classic winner Gun Runner and Distaff winner Forever Unbridled are both targeting the Pegasus as well. The race runs at 1 1/8 miles at Gulfstream Park.

Collected kept pace with eventual winner Gun Runner through blazing open fractions before yielding late, beaten by 2 1/4 lengths. West Coast sat off the leaders, saw them distance through the turn and finished 3 1/2 lengths back of Gun Runner.

A son of City Zip, Collected entered the Classic off a win over Arrogate in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic at 1 1/4 miles. He also won races at a mile, 1 1/16 miles and 1 1/8 miles during his most-recent campaign. At age 3, he shipped East to win a graded stakes at Keeneland.

West Coast, by Flatter, was a late developer as a sophomore this year, going on to win the Los Alamitos Derby before the Grade 1 Travers and Pennsylvania Derby for owners Gary and Mary West.
