Christophe Clement knows he is going to the Breeders' Cup. He just doesn't know how many of his charges will be in the starting gate.
But one definitely will be: Gufo, whose win in the Sword Dancer (G1) at Saratoga guaranteed him a berth in the Breeders' Cup Turf. Last out, the 4-year-old Declaration of War colt finished third in the Joe Hirsch Classic (G1) at Belmont.
"His last work was with Joel Rosario last weekend, he looked good," Clement told Horse Racing Nation Tuesday. "He will work again this coming weekend at Belmont, and we are planning on shipping him on Sunday to the Breeders Cup."
Clement also has a trio of 2-year-olds whom he hopes will make the cut for juvenile races. Pre-entries for the 14 Breeders' Cup races will be announced on Wednesday.
Slipstream graduated in September in his third try then won the Futurity (G3) at Belmont Park. The son of More Than Ready was pre-entered in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.
"He's also doing well, also worked with Rosario last weekend on the turf," Clement said. "We're planning to ship this coming Sunday, with one more work more at Belmont."
Next up is Pizza Bianca, owned by celebrity chef Bobby Flay, who was second in the Natalma (G1) at Woodbine after winning her debut.
"Doing well, worked last weekend at Belmont on the turf. And if everything goes well, we're planning on her going to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf," Clement said.
Clement's third hopeful is Derrynane, winner of a listed stakes at Woodbine last out.
"If she's invited we'll go to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint on the grass," Clement said. "We just don't know yet if she's invited or not."
