Charting the 2012 Horse of the Year race

It’s a long season with many more important races to come, but it is never too early, in my opinion, to start discussing who may become the 2012 Horse of the Year. With that in mind, I took the current Top 10 horses from the most recent NTRA poll, of which I am a voter, and charted all of their results this year. I realize there are some candidates you may favor that are not on the chart, but I kept things clean by only including the current Top 10. It’s interesting to see the  similarities and differences on the media poll compared to the fan's poll right here on HRN. Please enjoy the chart, my corresponding comments, and video highlighs for each horse, but most importantly, I’d like you to join in the debate with a comment, and by voting on the corresponding poll on the right.

His trainer didn't, his asst. trainer did. Use your resources.
Profile of a horse of the year: DOMINATION or at least VERY strong season ending performances to back up early season dominance...many a late bloomer has stolen the title with late seasong heroics.
your the one who wants to sound like a cool dude who knows his shit. Problem is you don't and I do. Everything I say on here is accurate. You make shit up off the top of your head a post it like its a fact. When did I ever say anything about turf/dirt? Yes, he's getting a rest, but his trainer NEVER said they're taking the YEAR easy, and NEVER said they were saving him for next year. You made that shit up, then posted it like is was a fact. Acclamation beats nobodies on the west coast and WILL NOT win the BC Turf. Try reading the DRF book Champions cover to cover, then read the American Racing Manual cover to cover, then read horses for dummies cover to cover, then go to Churchill Downs like 10,000 times and then maybe you'll know as much about horse racing as me. i have forgotten more about horse racing than you know.
Acclamation is not overrated as a 10f, 12f, or turf horse. If he wins the same stakes he did last year and adds the BC Turf, I don't see why he would not be in the HOTY discussions.
Get off your high dirt ass and learn to respect the NATURAL surface. While TV is sometimes right on calling my bluff you just want to sound like a cool dude who knows what he is talking about. I know being second best to a 13 y.o. is hard, but with your experience I'm sure you'll survive. Manutim has said multiple times this year "we're giving him a rest and taking it easy this one".
cocoa2, you totally made that shit up. Stop posting things that aren't true hoping nobody knows better. And, Acclamation has no chance at HotY. He's so overrated.
Close, forego, they are saving him after his action packed year last year to sweep the track records next year and crush.
Acclamation is being wisely managed this year, they are preserving him for a second half of the year to make a run at HOTY,
Rail bird. I am with you on that. Really liked Smarty.
Royal Delta 1 win a G2, Hansen, NO, BODE..Already beat by IHA twice how can he win the award? MMM,ACC,RTG,GOD 4 horses have a small chance to dethrone IHA thats it.
True, I am still pissed that Smarty Jones got stiffed !!!
Go back MOST years and the leader in HOY voting at the half way point was rarely that one in November.
My vote is a tie for HOY - Ron the Greek and Royal Delta...not that I'm biased or anything!
Union Rags is Injured and out for the year.
Right now it's between Bode, IHA, and Ron the Greek. I have a feeling Bode will win some more G1 races and pull it off though.
  • MarcelloMarocco · Bode needs to win 3 GR1's to even come near IHA. Runner up's don't get you HOTY, or Champion 3 yr old. JMO. In my book it is I'll Have Another, Ron the Greek, and Game On Dude , 123. · 1929 days ago
Can't arfue with this order. IHA is the HOTY until someone notches that 3rd GR1 !!. MMM needs a GR1 win prior to the classic to really get the title, and Ron The greek is most certainly deserving with 2 huge GR1 wins. Game On Dude has beat no one yet, and that Gold Cup field was as pathetic of a GR1 caliber field as I have seen in some time.
horse gal wake up
hansen should be horse of the year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I personally think when all is said and done by seasons end that Game On Dude and Acclamation will end up being the only 2 horses with a legit chance of winning 2012 HOY over I'll Have Another. Who's clearly the front runner at this point with wins in the G1 Santa Anita Derby, G1 Kentucky Derby, and G1 Preakness. I'm not sure where Baffert intends on running Game On Dude next? But you'd have to think the G1 Pacific Classic and G1 Goodwood Stakes are both pre-Breeders Cup Classic targets. Should Game On Dude win both of those races and the Classic to go along with his recent G1 Hollywood Gold Cup win, it would hard not to give him the edge over I'll Have Another at that point, IMO. Acclamation, IMO, also stands a chance for HOY honors. But he's got a taller order in front of him than Game On Dude does. It would help his cause if his connection would be willing to leave California to race. At least travel as far east as Chicago and Arlington Park for the G1 Arlington Million in August. Maybe the G1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at Belmont or the G1 Northern Dancer and G1 Patteson Canadian International at Woodbine prior to the G1 BC Turf would definitely be a resume' builder for Acclamation, and I think the Million, Northern Dancer, and Canadian International are all winnable races for him. His toughest task will be taking on the imminent European onslaught that will be headed toward the BC Turf in November.
I'll put Ron the Greek at the top right now, which is sickening since I bet him in a 2yo race at Remington Park & he didn't even hit the board.
