CCA Oaks shaping up to be a Monomoy Girl, Midnight Bisou rematch

The Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks, to be run July 22 at Saratoga, will give Midnight Bisou a second shot at Monomoy Girl.

The two fillies were sent off as the favorites in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks May 4, when Monomoy Girl fended off Wonder Gadot to win and Midnight Bisou rallied for third. Both fillies made their next starts at Belmont Park but ran three weeks apart.

Monomoy Girl picked up her third straight Grade 1 in the Acorn Stakes June 9 while Midnight Bisou, who was transferred to the Steve Asmussen barn from West Coast-based Bill Spawr, returned to the winner’s circle in the Grade 2 Mother Goose June 30.

Both fillies turned in four-furlong works Sunday with Monomoy Girl working at Churchill Downs and Midnight Bisou working over Saratoga’s Oklahoma training track.

Monomoy Girl went in :48.80, and trainer Brad Cox told the Daily Racing Form she hit five furlong in 1:00.80 galloping out and six furlongs in 1:14. The trainer said the plan is to van out of Kentucky Monday night and arrive at Saratoga Tuesday morning.

“Her weight’s great, she’s moving well, her conditioning is good,” Cox told the DRF. “We’re sitting in a good spot with her.”

The trainer also added that Midnight Bisou will make the Coaching Club American Oaks “more interesting.”

Up in Saratoga, Midnight Bisou made her move in :50.73, her first work back since winning the Mother Goose.

“That’s quite a bit in 22 days,” Asmussen told the DRF, referring to the filly shipping from Churchill Downs to Belmont then Saratoga. “I’m just looking for her to be 100 percent. I expect her to come out of it in good shape and maintain the attitude she’s kept since she came into our barn.”

Eskimo Kisses and Gio Game are expected to run, with Chocolate Martini and Cash Out also possible.
