Breeders' Cup bars Hollendorfer from 2019 championships

Jerry Hollendorfer’s ban from Santa Anita Park will extend to the Breeders’ Cup, the organization announced Friday.

The Breeders’ Cup publicity staff released a statement Friday afternoon saying the organization would “honor” Santa Anita’s “house rules.”

Those house rules include the banishment of Hollendorfer, the Hall of Fame trainer who The Stronach Group banished from its tracks in June. The Stronach Group operates Santa Anita, which will host the Breeders’ Cup on Nov. 1-2.

“Breeders’ Cup leads by example in the conduct of Thoroughbred racing at the highest levels of safety and integrity for its athletes,” the Breeders’ Cup statement read. “We have partnered with Santa Anita to implement extensive reforms related to medication practices, testing protocols, veterinary exams, injury management, onsite requirements and racing surface testing in preparation for the 2019 World Championships.

“Earlier this year, the Stronach Group made the decision to prohibit Jerry Hollendorfer from participating at all TSG-owned tracks, including Santa Anita. As announced by the Chairman of the Board, Fred Hertrich, and consistent with Santa Anita’s position as host of this year’s World Championships, we will honor their house rule and Jerry Hollendorfer will not be permitted to enter horses at this year's event.”

The Stronach Group in June banned Hollendorfer from the grounds after four of his horses died as a result of injuries in racing and training at Santa Anita since Dec. 26.

A statement issued by The Stronach Group at the time of his banishment read in part: “Mr. Hollendorfer’s record in recent months at both Santa Anita and Golden Gate Fields has become increasingly challenging and does not match the level of safety and accountability we demand.”

Hollendorfer horses who, until Friday’s news, were under consideration for Breeders’ Cup championships included Vasilika (Filly & Mare Turf) and Danuska’s My Girl (Filly & Mare Sprint). Both mares raced earlier this month in stakes at Keeneland – rather than in Santa Anita stakes – due to Hollendorfer’s banishment.

Since Del Mar’s meet ended on Labor Day, Hollendorfer-conditioned horses have run at Fresno, Keeneland, Los Alamitos and Parx Racing.
