Vekoma, at 11-2, and Shancelot, at 6-1, are the early favorites for the 2020 Breeders' Cup Sprint in international futures odds, though it's hard to say whether either of them will appear in the race.
Vekoma, undefeated in three starts this year, also was the early 7-2 favorite for the Breeders' Cup Mile, and the 4-year-old earned a berth for both races. The millionaire Candy Ride colt earned an automatic berth in the Dirt Mile by winning the Grade 1 Met Mile last out, and his score in the Carter Handicap (G1) gave him a slot in the Breeders' Cup Sprint.
Shancelot — runner up in the Sprint last year — hasn't raced this year. Steve Asmussen took over training of the 4-year-old son of Shanghai Bobby in the spring after he sustained an injury. He resumed workouts in late June but hasn't had a timed work since July 26.
After those two, the odd jump into double digits, with C Z Rocket at 11-1 and four horses at 12-1: Collusion Illusion, Whitmore, Win Win Win and Yaupon.
Six-year-old C Z Rocket is riding a four-race win streak, with his most recent victory in the Pat O'Brien Stakes (G2) at Del Mar on Aug. 29. Trained by Peter Miller, those wins followed a stretch in which the son of City Zip failed to win in 11 races dating back nearly two years.
Collusion Illusion, trained by Mark Glatt, is five-for-six, and he was pulled up in his only loss, the American Pharoah Stakes (G1) last year. The son of Twirling Candy got his first Grade 1 score last out in the Bing Crosby Stakes on Aug. 1.
Whitmore's last win was in the April 18 Count Fleet Handicap (G3). The 7-year-old gelded son of Pleasantly Perfect, trained by Ron Moquett, then finished second in the Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (G1) and seventh in the Forego Stakes on Aug. 29 (G1).
Win Win Win, trained by Michael Trombetta, also is coming off a G1 win, in Saratoga's Forego Stakes on Aug. 29. His first race of 2020 came after an 11-month layoff, when the son of Hat Trick finished 10th in the First Defence Stakes, followed by a runner-up effort in an allowance optional claiming race at Belmont on July 2.
Yaupon, another Asmussen trainee, broke his maiden on first try in June at Churchill Downs. The 3-year-old Uncle Mo colt followed that with an allowance win at Saratoga in July and a score in the Amsterdam Stakes (G2) in August, making him a perfect three-for-three in his career.
Volatile, with five wins in six starts — the latest a score in the Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap — was listed as the 4-1 favorite by Oddschecker, but the horse was retired this week after sustaining an injury.
