Breeders’ Cup President Drew Fleming was among a group of sports commissioners and other top executives on a Saturday conference call with President Donald Trump addressing the nationwide response to the coronavirus pandemic.

According to pool reports, Trump told the group he hopes to have fans back in stadiums and arenas in August or September. Following the call, the White House provided the following statement:

“Today, President Donald J. Trump spoke by telephone with commissioners of major league sports to discuss the all-of-America response to COVID-19. The President recognized the good work being done by many teams and players to care for their communities, workforces, and fan bases across the nation. The commissioners thanked President Trump for his national leadership and for his interest in the sports industry. President Trump encouraged them to continue to support their fellow Americans during this challenging time.”

Sports leaders on the conference call included:
Drew Fleming (Breeders’ Cup), Gary Bettman (NHL), Cathy Engelbert (WNBA), Don Garber (MLS), Roger Goodell, (NFL), Rob Manfred (MLB), Vince McMahon (WWE), Jay Monahan (PGA Tour), Adam Silver (NBA), Dana White (UFC), Roger Penske (IndyCar) and Michael Whan (LPGA).

The initial list of those participating in the call did not include Fleming or any other representative for horse racing. It’s unclear whether that was an oversight or if Fleming was a late add.

Fleming has served as president of Breeders’ Cup Ltd. since replacing Craig Fravel following last year’s Breeders’ Cup World Championship at Santa Anita Park in early November. He had previously served as the chief operating officer of Breeders’ Cup where he oversaw relations with host tracks, sponsorship, marketing and legal operations.

Further details of what was discussed between the sports leaders and President Trump have yet to be revealed. Inquiries for further comment from Breeders' Cup have not been returned.
