Leading the pack with futures odds of 7-2, Vekoma is undefeated in three starts this year — all at odds shorter than 2-1. Trainer George Weaver has options for him. The millionaire Candy Ride colt earned an automatic berth in the Dirt Mile by winning the Grade 1 Met Mile last out, and his score in the Carter Handicap (G1) gave him a slot in the Breeders' Cup Sprint.
This year’s Breeders’ Cup is at Keeneland, so the Dirt Mile will be run around two turns. Vekoma's lone win around two turns came in last year's Blue Grass (G2) at 1 1/8 miles.
The other shorter-priced contenders include Improbable, fifth in last year's edition of the Dirt Mile, at 6-1. Tiz the Law is even with Charlatan at 7-1, and then Kentucky Derby winner Authentic and Rushie are at 8-1.
Tiz the Law, runner-up in the Kentucky Derby and winner of the Belmont Stakes and the Travers (G1), Authentic and Improbable are pointed to the Breeders' Cup Classic.
Charlatan has yet to return to the work tab after undergoing ankle surgery in June. And Rushie is in the mix after he bypassed the Kentucky Derby to win the Pat Day Mile (G2) at Churchill Downs on Derby Day.
Below are the best prices in early odds that have been released on the Dirt Mile by international bookmakers.
|Tiz the Law||7-1|
