Baffert to train Fasig-Tipton Midlantic record $1.8 million filly

Owner Michael Lund Petersen's agent went to $1.8 million on Tuesday for a filly by Into Mischief, setting a Fasig-Tipton's Midlantic record for the sale of 2-year-olds in training.

And there was some reassurance on the way.

Petersen, in a meeting with reporters shared by Paulick Report, said trainer Bob Baffert, who conditions his horses, was on the phone as bidding continued.

“I am solely relying on Bob," said Petersen, who founded Pandora jewelry company. "If he thinks it’s a good purchase and it’s my turn, then I’m going to buy them. I don’t know about horses to spend $1.8 million. I can tell you that. I need a little bit of advice.”

Hip 360 is out of Peggy Jane, a stakes placed winner by Kafwain, who is already the dam of two winners from as many foals to race.

Petersen said he bought two horses last year. Mucho Gusto just won his third graded graded stakes Saturday at Santa Anita Park in the Laz Barrera (G3), while Tale of the Union, who won on debut last summer at Del Mar, is a couple weeks from his return to the work tab.

Petersen's best prior runner was Mor Spirit, the Grade 1 Met Mile winner.

So that gives Baffert a high-profile filly. He'll also train a colt to watch this upcoming season,
a $3.65 million son of Curlin he called a "wow horse."

The fireworks may also not be over at the Midlantic sale. Later Tuesday, the half-brother to Preakness Stakes winner War of Will was due in the auction ring.

The Midlantic sale has produced a million-dollar horse in the past five years, with the previous record at $1.5 million.
