Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen continues to be a matter of days from becoming the winningest Thoroughbred trainer in North American history.

After going winless with his last 18 starters, including two on Monday, Asmussen has a career total of 9,435. That is 10 short of the record set by the late Dale Baird between 1961 and 2007, according to Equibase.

Asmussen’s three Tuesday entries (with morning-line odds) include:

Thirteen Stripes (4-1), 3-year-old filly, six-furlong $36,000 allowance, second race at Indiana Grand (2:56 p.m. EDT).

Dealin’ Stelen (6-1), 5-year-old gelding, 1 1/16-mile $15,000 claiming, fourth race at Indiana Grand (3:58 p.m. EDT).

Dyess (7-2), 4-year-old gelding, one-mile-and-70-yard, $8,500 claiming, race 3 at Louisiana Downs (4:37 p.m. EDT).

Asmussen is averaging 1.48 victories per day in 2021. He is on pace to break Baird’s record on or around next Tuesday.

The world record may be 1 1/2 years away for Asmussen. Based in Peru, trainer Juan Suárez Villarroel has 9,874 victories, according to the website Página de Turf. Since last fall Suárez Villarroel has averaged about 0.75 wins per day, meaning Asmussen could catch him in early 2023 if both maintain their current win rates.
