In recent weeks, Paul Zilm has transformed from a horse racing fan following the 2020 Kentucky Derby trail to a more serious analyst ahead of the Sept. 5 race at Churchill Downs.

As Circa Sports’ risk supervisor, Zilm recently helped launch just the second fixed-odds Kentucky Derby future joining fellow Nevada sports book William Hill U.S.

“With a limited menu with so many sports still shut down, it made sense to look at it and gauge interest,” Zilm said. “We’re approaching our first-year anniversary of being in business. Every time we do something for the first time, it’s really a feeling out process to see if there’s interest and if it’s something that’s going to take to market.”

Until brick and mortar casinos reopen, Circa Sports is taking bets via its mobile app within Nevada. Limits have started at $200 on individuals and $500 on yes/no propositions, which are unique to this book for Derby futures.

“If someone really wants to take a stand against, say, Charlatan — ‘I really do not believe in this horse. I don’t think this horse is going to get to the Derby’ — you can lay the no and be aggressive,” Zilm said.

Consider that William Hill has assumed plenty of liability on certain Derby prospects dating back to its futures opening last fall, and Circa may offer bettors more alluring prices in some instances.

“I definitely respect what William Hill has done,” Zilm said. “Up until the last couple of weeks, they had as many as 180 horses in their pool, which is a lot to follow and keep track of. So when we decided to put ours together, I really tried not to reference what they had. We were dealing with, what’s our philosophy on booking futures?”

Zilm said Circa’s board is intended to include only horses with a realistic shot at running in the Derby. Among them is Cezanne, the un-raced, $3.65 million colt from the Bob Baffert barn who was added at 55-1 after a request came in from social media.

The yes/no props are available on Nadal, Tiz the Law, Charlatan and Authentic. Opening prices are listed below.

Zilm said they remain, for the most part, accurate of the real-time odds available on the Circa app, with the Arkansas Derby (G1) runner-up King Guillermo among the exceptions after he took a sizable wager this week.
