Horse Racing Nation Picks the Derby!

Photo: Eclipse Sportswire

Revolutionary ... or is it Orb? The Horse Racing Nation team had no trouble selecting those two 2013 Kentucky Derby contenders as the most likely to be draped in the roses, but deciding between the two was a little bit tougher. Based solely on first place votes, Revolutionary is the selection, garnering (9) first place votes. Orb was a close second with (8) first place votes, but with a strong representation in the second place slot, Orb is the overall leader in points. Interestingly, each of the nine team members that picked Revolutionary to win, had Orb for second, including yours truly. That should mean that a Revolutionary - Orb exacta has absolutely no chance of coming in. Normandy Invasion with (3) first place votes and good representation on each of the four lines is the third choice according to Horse Racing Nation, while Verrazano, the 4-1 morning line second choice is clearly not a favorite of the group.

Nice call, Alex!
Someone tell me they boxed my picks...
Golden Soul has more piciks than Black Onyx and Mylute why?
  • head_heart_hooves · Golden Soul has been pointing here a long time, he should have no problem with 1 1/4, and look at those delicious odds. Must use in tri/superfectas if you ask me. · 2117 days ago
  • jmac500 · I will use him that's for sure. · 2116 days ago
my official pick- Oxbow. sentimental favorite- goldencents.
Revolutionary and Will Take Charge to battle it out in the stretch.
The picks seem to be a real indication of just how wide open thiis Derby really is!
Orb with Vyjack the upsetter
Orb,Goldencents & Itsmyluckyday hit the wire in a Blanket finish.
Gotta agree with Mike Shutty, Mark Midland, Matt Scott, Christina More, and Ash Tamulonis on their picks the most.
I would love Orb and Verrazano to both be as good as I think they are and to duel down the stretch all the way to the wire... but that's just me...
Nice picks, guys... Of course, these are incredibly premature (without odds, conditions, etc) For a fast track: 1st- Orb 2nd- Palace Malice 3rd- Java's War 4th- Goldencents 5th- Mylute..... That would be my super high five. I allowed my six year old to pick a name, and he picked "Golden Soul" so I'll play him $2 WPS. Than, my 11 yr old handicapped it and likes #14 Verrazano. IF IT's MUDDY: All bets are off, and I'm dumping money on REVOLTUTIONARY (and side bet on Palace Malice, and of course my son's picks)
Good pick HRN. I see Goldencents setting an early fast pace. Kevin Krigger never rates the first quarter
If it's a sloppy track you have to put money on Vyjack and Palace Malice.
... does your dad like Indian food, jmac?
War Pass and Midnight Lute were.
No horse in this field has raced enough for it to be deemed a mudder
Those are the mudders to.
Oxbow and Mylute are my picks for the going, but not going to be surprised if Orb or Black onyx do it
Itsmyluckyday is will be really tough. He should get a good trip with tactical speed which will be needed in this group as they will be bunched up into the first turn. He needed the last and I like the mile breeze 2 back. Orb will be caught wide into the first turn which means he will be wide throughout, I think it will cost him to run second. Verrazano will run his race also staying close to the pace but will be out finished to run third . In the end he will be the best of the lot but I am not so sure this will be his day.
Palace Malice has ran well in both the Blue Grass Stakes and the Risen Star earlier this spring, looking for a solid performance on Derby Day.
