Juvenile Fillies Turf – Will a European Finally Win?

Out of 12 European fillies to contest the four editions of the Juvenile Fillies' Turf, only one, Heart Shaped, finished in the money in 2008. This year with the Lasix ban affecting the Americans, the Irish, English and French fillies get a level playing field and could even out-perform their American counterparts who are used to running on medication.

Five fillies from the other side of the ocean will do their best to take home the Breeders' Cup trophy. Let's take a closer look at the ones with the greatest chance to do so.

#3 SKY LANTERN (Red Clubs – Shawanni, by Shareef Dancer) (3-1)
Sky Lantern owns a speed over stamina pedigree. She placed in a listed stakes and two Group 3 events before winning the the seven furlong Moyglare Stud Stakes (G-1) at the Curragh in Ireland. Sky Lantern earned a 112 Timeform, which is the highest rating of the European fillies . Her trainer Richard Hannon is a top juvenile conditioner. He trained Canford Cliffs to five consecutive Group 1 wins; However, Hannon's record in Breeders' Cup races is poor. Of five runners in Breeders' Cup races, two failed to finish and the best placed horse was Paco Boy's fourth in the Mile. She is Hannon's best chance for a Breeders Cup placing.

#4 FLOTILLA (Mizzen Mast – Helstra, by Nureyev) (8-1)
Flotilla has the pedigree to relish middle distances. The French-bred youngster has one of the classiest female families in the Juvenile fillies turf. She's a full sister to Stern Opinion, a multiple stakes winner in France. her half brother Dr. Arbatach is a Champion Sprinter in Puerto Rico. Although her dam won only once in nine starts, Helstra is a half sister to the popular sire Stormy Atlantic and a half sister bore Bluegrass Stakes (G-1) winner Bandini. Flotilla's second dam Flippers won the Santa Anita Oaks. Her fourth dam Moccasin and fifth dam Rough Shod are blue hens. Flotilla was beaten a total of 3 1/2 lengths by Group 1 and 2 winners in France over heavy and soft turf at sprint distances and her highest Timeform Rating is 104. According to Timeform, not many of the fillies impressed in those races. Flotilla is bred to go longer and could love the firm turf at Santa Anita. She is the first Breeders' Cup starter for her trainer Mikel Delzangles.

#10 WATERWAY RUN (Arch - Princess Consort, by Dixieland Band) (10-1)
The Pennsylvania-bred Waterway Run has a stamina oriented pedigree. She has only one blemish on her record, a fourth place finish in her second start. She came back to beat the winner of that race in the Oh So Sharp Stakes earning a 105+ Timeform Rating. The filly is a Group 3 winner in England at seven furlongs and she should excel at longer distances. Additionally, her Timeform ratings are improving in every start. Waterway Run's trainer Ralph Beckett won the first Breeders' Cup Marathon with Muhannak.

#12 THE GOLDCHEONGSAM (Red Clubs - Fuerta Ventura, by Desert Sun) (20-1)
The Gold Cheongsam has a miler's pedigree. is a capable runner, but she was no match for Group 1 sprinters in the Cheveley Park, finishing off the board. Her best Timeform Rating, 104+, was earned in April. The Gold Cheongsam's trainer Jeremy Noseda has brought ten starters to the Breeders' Cup. He conditioned longshot Wilko to a surprise victory in the 2004 Juvenile. In 2007 and 2009, his charges finished fourth in the Juvenile Turf. The Gold Cheongsam appears a cut below the best Europeans.

INFANTA BRANCA is an Also Eligible.

Sky Lantern and Waterway Run posses the highest potential. Sky Lantern owns established form and she is used to traveling in a pack. She earned her highest Timeform Rating in her last race. Waterway Run is a quickly improving filly. She moves up in class, but she's also been running over heavy ground, so she's plenty fit. Both of these fillies are worth consideration in your wagers.

Meet Laurie Ross

I've been around horses for most of my life, working in racing stables as a hot walker and exercise rider in my teenage years, and later as a volunteer with rescued and retired racehorses. I became interested in pedigree when the sons and daughters of my favorite horses started their racing careers.

For more than a decade, I've passionately studied pedigree, how it applies to handicapping and breeding theories. In 2010, I joined Horse Racing Nation as their Pedigree Analyst, focusing on juvenile stakes winners, Triple Crown contenders and first crop sires from a handicapping perspective.

In 2011, I accepted the role of South Florida Coordinator and Advisory Board Member for the national non-profit Thoroughbred Racing Fan Association (ThoroFan). Working closely with Gulfstream Park management and other race fans, we created a ThoroFan Chapter at Gulfstream Race Track. Our main project is assisting Thoroughbred rescue and re-training groups.

I continue to maintain my website Iron Maidens Thoroughbreds and blog of the same name. As a pedigree consultant, I specialize in assisting small to mid-size breeding/training operations with broodmare breeding reports, sales catalog analysis and recommendations on claims and private sales. 10 - 20% of all proceeds are donated to Thoroughbred rescue and retraining groups.
I welcome your questions regarding pedigree, handicapping and breeding. If you would like me to cover a specific topic please contact me at lross@horseracingnation.com.
