Sound Machine, bred on the same cross as Practical Joke, could shine on the Kentucky Oaks trail, while two daughters of Empire Maker completed a thrilling exacta recently at Santa Anita Park. Let's take a look at some emerging 3-year-old fillies and their bloodlines.

(Into Mischief - Ava Pie, by Distorted Humor)

Sound Machine danced to a 6 1/2-length victory in the
Glitter Woman Stakes at Gulfstream Park last Saturday. The Saffie Joseph Jr. trainee previously finished second behind Spanish Point in the House Party Stakes as the odds-on favorite. The $500,000 Keeneland September Yearling is living up to expectations with a 4: 2-1-0 ($89,164) record.

Sound Machine has miler/middle distance breeding. Into Mischief is the current leading sire by earnings. His offspring are best from sprints to 1 1/8-miles.

On the dam side, Sound Machine is a half-sister to Forever Liesel, a listed winner at 1 1/8 miles who is also Grade 3-placed. Their dam, Ava Pie, is a half-sister to stakes-winning sprinter/milers The Truth or Else and Decorated Soldier. Sound Machine’s second dam, the hardy Lakenheath, is a multiple graded winner between a mile and 1 1/8 miles. The mare earned $556,066 in 30 starts.

Sound Machine is bred on the same cross as multiple Grade 1 winning sprinter/miler Practical Joke, last year’s Bourbonnete Oaks heroine Naughty Joker and Quebec, winner of last year’s Power Break Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

(Dunkerque (FR) - Theoricienne (FR), by Kendor (FR)) Neck

She's My Type became a blacktype earner in her second start while capturing the
Ginger Brew Stakes over the Gulfstream Park lawn on Saturday. The Christophe Clement-conditioned dark bay filly held off the fast-closing Moral Reasoning by a neck, getting seven furlongs in 1:28.12.

She’s My Type has a turf miler/middle distance pedigree. Dunkerque is a French multiple Group 3-winning sprinter. Other than She’s My Type, his only other graded/listed winner is Blacktype, a nine-furlong winner who is closely related to She’s My Type. Dunkerque is also represented by two stakes-placed sprinters. She’s My Type traces back to the legendary Natalma, dam of the great Northern Dancer. Natalma is She’s My Type’s fifth dam.

She’s My Type is a half-sister to French listed sprinter Tour to Paris. Their dam Theoricienne is a half-sister to the aforementioned Blacktype, who has earned $973,335 in 37 starts. Kendor was 1988 French Champion 2-Year-Old. He’s an established broodmare sire, with 58 graded/listed winners. Kendor’s most accomplished son is Marchand D’Or, a French multiple Group 1-winning sprinter/miler. The daughters of Kendor bear winners at all distances, all over the lawn.

(More Than Ready - Alhucema, by Aldebaran)

Moral Reasoning had to steady going into the first turn of the Ginger Brew Stakes. She made her way to the outside and gained ground through the stretch to miss victory by a head. The Chad Brown trainee sports a 3: 1-2-0 ($72,300) record.

Moral Reasoning has a miler pedigree. More Than Ready is a national Top 20-ranked sire. He holds the distinction of having sired winners of seven Breeders’ Cup races, including last year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile heroine Uni. More Than Ready’s offspring have no distance limitations.

Moral Reasoning is the first black type earner in the immediate family. Her dam is a half-sister to 2014 Breeders’ Cup Mile hero and sire Karakontie. She’s also a half-sister to stakes-winning sprinter/milers Sunday Sunrise and Bottega, a listed winner in France. Moral Reasoning traces back to the great, multi-champion turf mare Miesque, who bore Classic/Stout Chef de Race sire Kingmambo.

2003 Champion Sprinter Aldebaran stood in Kentucky for five years before shipping to Japan. He’s the sire of only four stakes winners, all sprinters.

(Empire Maker - Spare Change, by Bernardini)

Storie Blue found the Santa Anita main track to her liking on Sunday. Batting every step of the way on the lead in a compact maiden field under Drayden Van Dyke, Storie Blue refused to be headed at any point in the race despite multiple challenges. The Bob Baffert trainee got a mile in 1:38.49.

Storie Blue has a classic-oriented pedigree, and turf could be an option. After standing at stud in America for seven years, Empire Maker relocated to Japan. The stallion returned to the U.S. in 2016 after the exploits of his grandson, 2015 Triple Crown winner and Horse of the Year American Pharoah. Empire Maker is represented by 95 graded/listed winners, including champion mare Royal Delta, Kentucky Derby hero Always Dreaming and this year’s Kentucky Derby hopeful Eight Rings.

Storie Blue is the fourth foal and winner in the immediate family filled with classy Phipps-family breeding. Although there’s currently no black type in the immediate family, Storie Blue’s second dam is multiple Grade 1 winning miler Finder’s Fee, winner of the Matron, Acorn, and three other stakes. Finder’s Fee is the second dam of multi-talented Edgewood Stakes winner Feathered, who also placed in the Grade 1 Starlet, Frizette, and American Oaks. Storie Blue’s third dam Fantastic Find captured the Hempstead Handicap at nine furlongs and was multiple graded placed from seven to nine furlongs. Bernardini is the damsire of 23 graded/listed winners, including Travers hero Catholic Boy, Kentucky Oaks heroine Serengeti Empress, plus this year’s Kentucky Derby hopeful Maxfield and Oaks hopeful Wicked Whisper.

(Empire Maker - Mamma Kimbo, by Discreet Cat)

Making her second career start, Classy Ruler took the overland route in a one-mile maiden event at Santa Anita. She tracked the pace set by Storie Blue and slowly gained ground through the stretch, missing victory by a neck to complete the exacta of Empire Maker daughters. The John A. Shirreffs trainee was a $700,000 Keeneland Yearling. She’s placed second in both starts and shows earnings of $21,400.

Classy Ruler sports a miler/middle-distance pedigree and has turf affinities in her bloodlines. She’s a half-sister to listed stakes-winning sprinter/miler Balandeen, who has earned $354,682 in 31 starts. Their dam, Mamma Kimbo, won the Fantasy Stakes (G2) during her five-race career. Classy Ruler’s second dam is multiple stakes-winning sprinter/miler Bag Lady Jane, a daughter of two-time Canadian champion filly Deputy Jane West. Discreet Cat is the damsire of five graded/listed winners, including last year’s Jessamine Stakes heroine Sweet Melania, a daughter of Empire Maker’s grandson, American Pharoah.
