Introducing The Tattooed Tracksider

January 14, 2017 06:40am

So, I want to introduce myself. Some of you may already know who I am. I have written for Horse Racing Nation as a guest blogger in the past. Additionally, I have made a decent name for myself as a writer with Lady and The Track and a quick stint with US Racing for Derek Simon.

My name is Casey Laughter and I wanted to formally let you all get to know myself a bit better, before I start bombarding you with my knowledge and opinions.

I remember the first time I saw a horse race. I was sitting on the floor of my home, playing with my toy horses when my dad walked in.

“Hey honey, have you ever seen the Kentucky Derby?”

“No, what is that?” With that response, dad turned on NBC. The arial view of Churchill Downs was instantaneously the moment I knew this is the world I wanted to be apart of. The day drew on and the favorite, Empire Maker, was getting much of the attention. However, at the end of the day, only one name mattered: Funny Cide.

The gutsy red gelding told the racing world by storm. Familiar rival Empire Maker was kept out of the Preakness, allowing Funny Cide to once again showcase his talent, this time the favorite. It looked like Funny Cide was in his prime and it was time for a Triple Crown winner. However, it wasn't the time. Empire Maker finally got his win in the Belmont Stakes.

At the time, I didn’t understand the difficulty of the Triple Crown. However, years went by and I continually got let down. First, Smarty Jones, then Barbaro, and it continued with horses such as I’ll Have Another and California Chrome.

I finally felt complete when American Pharaoh finally graced the racing world, first winning every prep race, then the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and finally, the Belmont Stakes. He went on to continue dominating his crop, minus a crazy Travers Stakes.

Horse Racing will always be my number one, outside of my “personal” life, where I share a life with a fiancé and a dog named Piper. I additionally am still in school, but I can see the light at the end of that tunnel. I have landed a job at the Dayton Daily News, which is one of the top papers in the country, as a staff writer and hopefully a reporter at some point.

For now, I want to thank everyone and anyone who made this blog a possibility. I could not be anymore grateful! I hope you all, as an audience, enjoy the many types of pieces I write and feature. I look forward to growing with you all!

I have loved horses for as long as I can remember, starting when Funny Cide crossed the wire in the 2003 Kentucky Derby. Thanks to my Dad, I now consume every ounce of thoroughbred literature I can.

When I am not stuffing my brain with pedigrees, I spend my free time with my fiancé, Daniel, and our dog, a Boxer mix named Piper. I enjoy hiking, reading, canoeing, and just relaxing.

In addition to Horse Racing Nation, for which I've shot numerous events, including the 2018 Kentucky Derby, I work for Bella Baby Photography, as well as a blog on my own platform.
