'Beautiful racecourses' list snubs U.S.; which track should make it?

January 08, 2019 06:51pm
A CNN list of the "world's most beautiful racecourses" published Tuesday includes the type of destinations we just don't have in America. There's racing over a frozen lake in Switzerland, Italy's famous Piazza del Campo street event and the Laytown Races that run along the Irish coastline.

But then there's Meydan, Ascot, Chantilly and a few other tracks that host some of the world's biggest races. "The sport of kings offers some spectacular venues for racegoers to savor," the article reads. But it doesn't include any United States venues.

The CNN list:

Meydan (Dubai)
St. Moritz (Switzerland)
Flemington Racecourse (Australia)
Piazza del Campo (Italy)
Happy Valley (Hong Kong)
Ascot (England)
Chantilly (France)
Laytown Races (Ireland)
Goodwood (England)
Cheltenham (England)

What's the biggest U.S. snub?

You have to start with the view offered by Santa Anita Park, which sits not far from the San Gabriel Mountains

If that's not cutting it for you, consider the gem that is Keeneland, which opens at just the right time of year to catch the finest days of spring and all the fall colors.

But is there any better racetrack setting in America than a Saratoga morning? There's a reason why Ken Ramsey named one of his top horses Backyard Heaven after his summer view of the Oklahoma Training Track.

All of that, plus Churchill Downs' Twin Spires, the modern feeling of Arlington and, of course, Del Mar's seaside oval. Not one belonged in the world's Top 10?

Let us know which track you'd liked to have seen on the list.
