Midwest Thoroughbreds stable star, The Pizza Man, will be given a break from racing and be pointed to a summer campaign with the goal of defending his title in the Grade 1 Arlington Million at Arlington Park.
Richard Papiese and his trainer Roger Brueggemann made the decision to give the seven year old gelding a break after The Pizza Man had not trained up to par as of late. “He wasn’t as crisp in his training, and we decided to give him a break. He will be sent to our farm in Florida in the next couple of days and be given as much time as he needs” Papiese said.
The plan now is to point to the Grade 3 Stars and Stripes in July at Arlington Park as a prep for the Million. Papiese left open the possibility of a stakes at Churchill before the Stars and Stripes, if The Pizza Man tells his connections he is ready to roll sooner. The Pizza Man has won $1,908,722 to date, and sports a record of 27-16-2-2.
