Wednesday's Best Bet: Crump chomping at the bit

Wednesday’s 9th race from Churchill Downs is a $120,000 maiden special weight event for three-year-olds and up traveling one mile on the main track (Post Time 5:06 p.m. EST).

No. 7 CRUMP (4-1) is making nice progress for Brendan Walsh. He did not fire in his first two career starts but really picked up the tempo with the addition of lasix in his last pair. His late pace ratings keep climbing and he exits a solid show finish in a similar course/distance event.

No. 9 Tartufo (9-2) stayed within hailing distance in his last pair and he hit the board in both of those local races under Rafael Bejarano. He surged late to miss by a neck as the beaten favorite at seven panels Nov. 6, and the added furlong of this race might put him over the top. He earned his top speed rating in a clear runner-up finish at this course/distance Oct. 2, and Crump landed the show that day.

No. 5 Fan Club (6-1) improved speed ratings in all three starts and was clearly second best in his last pair. He adds blinkers and moves to the Brad Cox barn, and the $325k Keeneland sales graduate should be heard from in the lane under Florent Geroux.

No. 6 Carmel Crush (5-1) hit the board in all four starts and earned a competitive number in a neck defeat at six furlongs Oct. 22. The gelded son of California Chrome should be forwardly placed.

No. 3 Mount Kenya (8-1) earned minor checks in all but one of his six outings. He stalked the pace and landed the place in his lone local dirt route try and he can get a piece of this.

No. 10 Elite Power (6-1) is a second timer for Bill Mott, and he could easily show more this time under Joel Rosario. The $900k purchase failed to get seriously involved in his local sprint bow Sept. 25, and the added ground of this race should help his cause.

No. 11 Street Ruckus (15-1) is back on dirt and that is probably a good thing. He chased the pace from an outer post and missed by a neck in a flat mile dirt race at Del Mar Sept. 6, and winner Barbwire clicked right back at Santa Anita Oct. 23.
