Wednesday's Best Bet: Caladan ready for new surface in Stanton Stakes

June 11, 2019 09:28pm

Wednesday’s seventh race from Delaware Park is the $50,000 Stanton Stakes for 3-year-olds traveling a mile and a sixteenth on the turf course (Post Time - 3:57 p.m. ET).

#3 CALADAN (4-1) is 4-for-6 with a second and a third on dirt. They tried to get him on turf in his first three starts at Delaware last year, but all three of those races were moved to the wet main track. Dam’s other two starters both won on turf, and Pecoraro is 9-for-14 at the current meet. His numbers continue to climb, and he looks like a solid threat on the surface switch.

#2 Eons (6-1) added blinkers and showed marked improvement in back-to-back turf wins at this distance on April 11 and May 17. He will probably save ground stalking the pace, and could easily make it three straight.

#5 Regally Irish (3-1) stretches back out in his third start after a layoff for the productive Vargas Jr./Motion team. He went all the way in a flat mile optional claiming turf route at Tampa Bay Jan. 11, and he will probably attempt similar theft tactics in this spot.

#6 Credit Swap (6-1) makes his first start in more than six months for Stidham, and this is also his first attempt around two turns. The $130k purchase will probably show speed under Nik Juarez.

#4 Five Star General (2-1) won a couple of flat mile races last year (originally scheduled for turf), including the Central Park Stakes at Aqueduct. He was on the Derby trail earlier this year, but failed both of those tests, and switched to turf and was beaten ten lengths on yielding ground in the Woodhaven Stakes April 20. He shows back-to-back Fair Hill bullets for this, but others are more enticing from a price standpoint.
