Thursday's Best Bet: Nantucket Red in the catbird seat at Keeneland

April 17, 2019 11:09pm

Thursday’s third race from Keeneland is an $83,000 allowance event for fillies and mares traveling a mile and a half on the turf course (Post Time - 2:12 p.m. ET).

We know #3 NANTUCKET RED (3-1) can travel at least a mile and an eighth because she won at that trip with decent numbers from start to finish at Gulfstream Park Jan. 12. She figures to stalk the pace under Julien Leparoux.

#1 Room To Finish (5-1) finished 1st or 2nd in all six starts and earned her best number yet in a LA-bred allowance victory at Fair Grounds March 10. This is a distance and class test for the 4-year-old filly.

#2 Twin Channel (3-1) should be all alone out front and we will see how far she wants to go. Both of her wins were flat mile races on all-weather ground at Turfway Park.

#6 Vevina (7-2) added blinkers and earned her best number yet in a runner-up finish on all-weather ground at Golden Gate March 15. She definitely seems to prefer synthetic but the equipment change might have had something to do with her quality effort last time.

I do not know what to make of #4 Finess Bere (5-2). She is winless in seven starts since arriving in this country December 2017. Brendan Walsh is having a productive meet and this one did show some signs of life in a show finish Feb. 16.

The Plays:
