Sunday's Best Bet: Lashara should be motoring late in Lake Placid

Sunday’s 9th race from Saratoga is the Grade 2 Lake Placid Stakes for 3-year-old fillies traveling a mile and an eighth on the inner turf course (Post Time 5:46 p.m. ET).

#3 LASHARA (4-1) is moving in the right direction for Mark Casse. She was nowhere late in her dirt sprint bow after taking money and chasing for a half-mile. They made her the favorite in a flat mile turf race second time out at Gulfstream, and she smartly rallied for the win. In her first start vs. winners, she showed nice late interest in a race without much pace, and ended up 2nd by a half-length that day. I like the late pace rating she earned June 14, and she might like this longer distance. This sure looks like a slow early/fast late race, and my top pick has the best finishing kick.

#8 Cat’s Pajamas (5-2) got the jump on my top choice last time, and it sure looks like a similar trip and race shape is in store. She smartly captured both of her turf starts since moving to the Graham Motion barn, and she could easily make it three straight.

#1 Speaktomeofsummer (5-1) added blinkers and finished a flat 4th in the Wonder Again (G3) June 20. That was her first start in more than seven months. She won her other two turf starts without blinkers last year, and the hood comes off today.

#2 Blame Debbie (8-1) is also conditioned by Graham Motion, and she might try to go to the lead in this paceless affair. She stretched out and went all the way in her dirt route maiden victory at Keeneland second time out last fall. She attended slow fractions in a ten furlong turf affair June 21, and she ended up a close-up 3rd in that one.
