Sunday's Best Bet: Fiery Opal ready to fire at Aqueduct

January 05, 2019 06:02pm
Sunday's eighth race from Aqueduct is an optional claiming event for New York-bred four-year-olds and up dashing seven furlongs on the main track (Post Time - 4:28 p.m. ET).

#9 FIERY OPAL (8-1) shipped from Parx to Belmont twice last year and ended up with a win and a show finish. He was part of the trifecta in nine of ten starts last year (3 wins) and his trainer shows a +ROI in sprints.

#4 Arthur’s Hope (5-2) ran well in a nose defeat Dec. 15 but is he going to be able to take pace pressure and duplicate that effort at seven panels? He won’t be 8-1 this time.

#1 Speightful Kitten (4-1) was a front runner in turf sprints but switched tactics and rallied for minor awards in his last two local dirt starts. He might sit a nice ground saving stalking trip behind the speed.

I mentioned #8 Playthatfunnymusic (8-1) in my Friday best bet but he scratched out of that nine furlong event to go in this extended sprint instead. He exits a big flat mile win at Aqueduct and the consistent gelding has struck at this distance before. He owns early-pressing versatility and his winning rider Dylan Davis stays put.

The Plays:

#9 to win

Exacta 9/1-4-8

Exacta 1-4-8/9

Trifecta 4-9/1-4-8-9/1-4-8-9
