Saturday's Best Bet: Clint Maroon can surprise in Secretariat Stakes

August 09, 2019 06:01pm

Saturday’s tenth race from Arlington Park is the Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes for 3-year-olds traveling one mile on the turf course (Post Time 6:28 p.m. ET).

#1 CLINT MAROON (20-1) moves to the Wayne Catalano barn (sold for $200k) and is interesting at a price. He stumbled from an outer post and the pace was too swift for him in the July 4 Manila, and he ended up an okay 4th as my top choice that day (show finisher Casa Creed won G2 Hall of Fame Aug. 2). I am expecting aggressive handling from the rail under his new pilot Channing Hill, and he might surprise if he is able to control the pace.

#3 Never No More (6-1) exits back-to-back extended sprint wins in Ireland for Aidan O’Brien. The improving colt should get a mile and his winning rider Ryan Moore strings along.

#7 Valid Point (5-1) is 2-for-2 for Chad Brown, and he could easily be this good. Both of his wins were at one mile under today’s rider Javier Castellano.

#6 Fog of War (3-1) added blinkers and finished 2nd in the aforementioned Manila Stakes at Belmont Park. Chad Brown’s colt won the Summer (G1) at this distance last summer and might move forward in his third start after a layoff.

#8 Faraway Kitten (9-2), #9 Crafty Daddy (5-1), and #4 The Last Zip (6-1) were the top three finishes in the American Derby (G3), and that was the local prep for this. I don’t think that was a strong race.

#2 Van Beethoven (8-1) has been in some very tough spots this year without success. He was a group two winner as a juvenile and might be more competitive today.

#5 Ry’s the Guy (15-1) won two straight and became his dam’s seventh turf winner June 29. A stalking trip is expected.
