Saturday's Best Bet: American Tap tries a route of ground in Selene

Saturday’s 8th race from Woodbine is the Grade 3 Selene Stakes for 3-year-old fillies traveling a mile and a sixteenth on the all-weather surface (Post Time 4:53 p.m. ET).

#5 AMERICAN TAP (7-2) has been very consistent since taking off early and fading in her career debut. All five of her races were around one turn, and she gained ground in the stretch in her last four. She distributes her energy evenly in sprints, and that bodes well for her chances over a route of ground. She should be grinding away in the stretch and might be able to get the job done at a hint of a price.

#7 Merveilleux (8-5) has routed four times with two wins and a pair of near-misses. I like her stalking style and she looks like the one to beat on paper.

#1 Owlette (9-5) is probably going straight to the front from the inside post. She likes this oval and exits a nice stakes sprint victory in her June 13 return. She removes blinkers and needs to relax on the lead in order to succeed at this distance.

#4 Diamond Sparkles (6-1) did not get much pace help in a rallying place finish in a local extended sprint July 13. She stretches back out and might be able to rally for a share.
