Friday's Best Bet: McWherter switches surfaces at Santa Anita

Friday’s 5th race from Santa Anita Park is a starter allowance event for four-year-olds and up dashing six furlongs on the turf course (Post Time 5:35 p.m. EST).

No. 7 MCWHERTER (5-2) hit the board in his last three dirt starts at Los Al and Steve Miyadi claimed him for $32k on Dec. 12. He won a pair of local events at six furlongs on turf last spring, and he should make his presence felt throughout under Flavien Prat.

No. 1 Wipe the Slate (5-2) exits a front running score at five panels and Doug O’Neill reclaimed him for $50k that day. He will probably show speed from the rail under his new rider John Velazquez.

No. 2 Mesut (2-1) might run out of ground especially if the pace does not heat up. The veteran gelding likes to rally for minor awards.
