Just one more thing with this article..yes 1:47 and a tick...but you have to remember that the stretch at Los Alo is proble a bit faster than the rest of the track because of the quarter horses and their astounding times. In the last 19 yrs only 5 horses ran the Preakness 1 3/16 the same as or a few ticks faster than CC and he was not being driven to it.
And I recall a few years back when Hollendorfer shipped his good chestnut filly back east (can't think of her name this morning) rather than run her against Zenyatta.
Counting eggs before chicken now? While I am looking forward to some interesting racing this fall, I fail to see that SB has done much so far this year with what he is running against..while CC has beaten the top in the country and just may have..just may hve won the TC if not for that 'accidental' incident at the break of the Belmont. These two colts seem to have the same racing style and it is going to be very interesting, but at this point my vote is still with CC.
Can't believe you did not mention Zenyatta from Hollywood Park, otherwise great article. I remember visiting Los Alamitos a few times when I worked at Santa Anita back in the 70's.
shuvee, (loved that filly) Secretariat did not win the first two by much more than California Chrome, yet he did not dominate?
meant 28 days, on his own track and at home...
One thing that Tonalist is not receiving a lot of credit for is that he returned 28 days after his win in the G2 Peter Pan Stakes to score the G1 Belmont Stakes in impressive fashion. While he may have been fresher, I believe the word “fresh” being used to describe so many Triple Crown spoilers is a bit excessive. @8 days equals 4 weeks, and did not run 1 1/4 miles 2 weeks before that, nor 1 3/16 miles either. Not taking anything away from Tonalist but..he was 'Fresh'....
I still believe it's too early for 2 yr olds just turning 3 and I think it should be run at 4 yrs of age..all 3 races, at least maybe we would not have soooo many promising babies broken down trying to get in...It's the big bucks breeding program for a fast return thats doing this to the sport..it's gotten out of hand..
almost 4 weeks from Preaknees to Belmont for Affirmed? I would like to say something here, steroids are no longer allowed. Small fields, hardly ever...Secretariat had what 4 or 5? Affirmed had 4? WOW! The way that breeding business has changed this game and the very horses running now California Chrome was a breath of fresh air for me...and he was taken out at the break, with more visable damage tha Big Brown and still tried to run his race. Although heartbroken at the finish I think he will prove his greatness down the line. Actually, with todays fragile horses and breeding to same, I say keep the spacing and the races vut make it for 4 year olds instead, instead of such a heavy demand on babies..so many start the trail but can't finish it and ARE RETIRED TO STUD because of the 'great bloodlines'.
