There are so many problems with racing, that horses retiring early is just a drop in the bucket. Want to make them wait until 5 to breed? They will still retire at 3. They will just be turned out for a year, letting their reputations and stud fees increase higher and higher with anticipation.
I'm not sure about this field, but I just watched Violence's past races for the first time today and I really don't get all the hype. I mean, he's very classy for sure. But he hasn't really done anything to blow horses away that he should be the rising Derby favorite that he has become. Maybe (hopefully) today will prove me wrong.
Still don't thing we have see Shanghai Bobby's best yet. Watching his races, I have have hardly seen his ears drop yet. If anything, he seemed bored in the Juvenile and just stopped running. Once the others caught him, he took off and won. Not easy to just go like that. Every now and then there are freaks who outrun their pedigree.
I dont think he'll be ready for the Derby, but is def going to be a contender to reckon with all year. Getting better and better, but I dont think hes there yet. However, anything can happen when you have that much raw talent.
Agree with everything except you forgot Algorithms in the horses lost to injury. Otherwise, you're spot on. This is going to be incredible.
I agree that all hope is not lost and that he didnt need to win this race. But, other than conditioning, this seems like a wasted race to more for Hansen. If he were going to lose, I would rather it be like Union Rags where he got boxed in. If he is going to have Derby success, hes going to have to rate and shoot through holes when they open. Id rather he get some experience being boxed in and working his way out of it, even if he loses the BG because thats one thing hes never had to deal with. We already know he can run out front at freakish paces. Just seems like, while the sky didnt fall, he really didnt do anything new to help him in the Derby. Hes still my Derby horse, but now its more on rooting for him that confidence.
Still way too early to tell. If Hansen cant control his pace better than that, he has no shot. But Union Rags also has to learn to run in a straight line down the stretch and navigate traffic better. How they both adapt will make a big difference.
