The performance that impressed me the most may not have been the best performance of the year in absolute terms, but it was the best in relative terms by far. I thought Dreaming of Julia's race at GP was monstrous for a 3yo filly. It was as fast or faster than the PAR for Grade 1 older males, but she was a 3YO filly and it was still March. If anything, that performance was better than anything Rachel had done at that stage in her own career. It really was a race for the ages (even though it was Pletcher at GP). That whole division has been very good on a relative basis. Princess of Sylmar is excellent, Beholder keeps winning, Close Hatches could be anything over time, Midnight Lucky could be anything. Injuries have taken a toll on the division, but that division is STRONG.
Game on Dude is having a spectacular year and is a well above average Grade 1 older male (as is Wise Dan), but I think he has generally been beating up a weak CA division this year. There have been a few very good performances on the east coast, but I'd have to consider them as about average as a group.
