He skipped the Derby due to knee concerns. John Nerud erred on the side of caution and kept him out of the Preakness and Belmont also. Too bad, as Dr. Fager could have had three more cracks at Damascus. travel_vic, I get the feeling that Dr. Fager is one of your favorites. Ranked #6 by Blood-Horse and #7 here. Blood-Horse should update their list to see what has changed in 13 years.

Spend A Buck. His Jersey Derby, where he set sprinter fractions being pushed by Huddle Up, and the holding of the future Belmont Winner Creme Fraiche was one of the bravest races I saw from a front runner. Loved Precisionest too, but he needed his won way to win at 10 furlongs. Affirmed and Sunday Silence were amazing becuase they were versatile. They could be placed anywhere in a race. Not so with Spend A Buck or Precisionist.

I wonder why this horse skipped the Triple Crown. He could have won the Derby or Preakness for sure. He ran in the 60's so is was kind of a big deal. I don't understand.

A good case can be made for Dr. Fager’s four year old season. Champion sprint, champion male turf, champion older male and horse of the year, all in the same year. He might have been undefeated that year without the rabbit Hedevar in the Brooklyn Handicap. The amazing still standing mile record of 1: 32 1/5 while carrying 134. The best miler in American racing history.
