Dad took me to track as a little boy:) i always rode horses too for pleasure.

When Afleet Alex nearly went down in the 2005 Preakness, he knew that the race had not been completed. Did he know exactly where the finish line was? Probably not, but he knew more "stretch" was in front of him and that he needed to keep running--and he did.

Yes Cocoa2 - I've seen a horse or two in my day. I've been around them all my life and been involved in the horse racing business for over 20 years. Horses are beautifal and powerful animals and I have great respect for them. But you and SallyW need to look up the big word travel_vic used. You might learn something. It's OK to love and respect horses - I do as well. But it's a scientific fact that they do not have the brain power to understand concepts such as winning, losing, finish lines, etc. Doesn't mean they aren't regal animals - just means they're not human. They have many other admirable qualities.

@Thess44. That is indeed NOT the case. Every experience point counts, Leparoux learned that he will have to make more of an effort to get Rags out of traffic early on in the race, and Rags learned how to cope with being boxed in most of the race. That is very important because w/ 20 horses in the derby, things will be tight and Rags now knows how to deal with it and not to panic. Also, most horses DO know where the finish line is- and they run their hearts out until they cross the wire. Horses are not stupid animals, if you lost a race, wouldnt you know?

hshfarms and sallyw - I understand that horses will run hard against other horses - they are competive animals. But do they actually learn something from getting beat - absolutely not - that is a human trait. And trust me - they have no concept of what a finish line is. They run as hard as they can until the jock eases them. A horse can learn to relax and not go 1,000 mph on the lead and other minor things through repetition, but it doesn't have the intellectual capacity to grasp the concept of winning and losing. Trust me on this one.

Maybe horses can't technically conceptualize, but there are numerous examples of the great ones like Seabiscuit playing chicken with his opponent only to get up in last strides and beat someone. Red pollard and others said he liked to humiliate his opposition. man O War was always said to be a bully of a horse wanting to win by 100 lengths and not just one. He enjoyed crushing his opponents. Exterminator used to bow to the crowds. He was in Mars Cassidy's opinion his best assistant starter as if he had a fractious horse, Cassidy always placed him next to Exterminator and he would lean on the other horse and calm him down. How many examples are there of horses like Black Gold who are injured and continue to struggle on to the finish line. I always thought that this is what distinguished the thoroughbred the will to win-- the Heart that so many writers talk about

When running a long race on a small oval like Charlestown where they have to go around the track twice, why doesn't the horse ease up after the first time they cross the finish line? Did the trainer talk to the horse before the race and explain that it's a route not a sprint and that it's a small oval?

Hard to say if he screwed up. Sure he could have moved sooner than the final 1/16th, but already having the earnings, I think the horse learned a lot more in defeat than he would have in victory. But...its still something to consider if he gets post 1-5 at Churchill

They train horses for fitness. Along with fitness they can also "learn" certain things through repetition, but they cannot and never will conceptualize - there is a GIANT difference between the two. That's my point and it's a undisputed FACT - not a debatable opinion. They are instinctually competive - I agree 100%. But, no horse ever understands the concept of a finish line or winning/losing. If you can't understand that there is no point in continuing this discussion. So I'll just end my input by wishing you all a very happy Easter. My best to all of you.

Thess44 - I would challenge you on that thought. My bet is you have never been on horse at a full gallop with another horse. They are very competitive. They may not know where the finish line is, but I guarantee you they want to be in front of the other horses.

Horse and jockey learned some valuable lessons for sure. I'm not worried about the outcome, Matz does not want this horse peaking now and after his 3 1/4 Rag in the FOY, he back off in training, not wanting to waste his best.

Finish line they can understand, as well as winning/loosing. Buckpasser did not understand winning/loosing for a long time, this shows in that he fought FOR the lead, but had no intention of keeping it.

Charles town is a different track, and most horses that race there are used to going around twice, therefore they dont think the race is over. Or if they are horses that only go short distances they are used to going around once. Horses CAN adapt to change you know.

What about horses who ship in to C-Town for the first time? I don't see them easing up when crossing the finish line for the first time. It's because they have no concept of what a finish line means. Trust me, it's a sceintific fact that horses don't understand things like that. Doesn't mean they are stupid animals, just means they don't have a human brain. Sometimes that's a good thing! Much respect for horses - powerful and beautiful creatures. I love working with them every day.

I know the big word tv used, and although horses are often given human qualities, they are competitive animals. As for knowing the finish line, some do some don't. Helps to have them go a mile if they are going to run a mile in a race just to let them know.

J Leparoux will get the job done. He got caught in a rare situation where the wall of horses was so tight he couldn't get through without taking a big chance, also the jockey on EP did a great job keeping him boxed in till the stretch which might have cost EP the race by ending up having to go so wide. UR at 1 1/4 mile lays over all of them.

Pollard also told Woolf in the Biscuit/WarAdmiral race to let War Admiral draw even so that they could eyeball each other. Knowing how Biscuit wasn't going to be intimidated, the 2 horses would figure it out, and then Seabiscuit would have his way. Makes you wonder how many races are decided that way. They clearly assess each other.
