t_v, Yes, there is a necropsy law in California, and apparently the trainer/track have only one hour after the death to notify the CHRB of the need for the exam. If it is not already law, the state is trying to be able to obtain the horse's vet records for the preceding 6 months. NO ONE knows when a breakdown can occur (the odds go WAAAAAAAY up if you are in Lukas' barn however). Our vet swore that hurting horses NEVER fully extend themselves as self protection, whereas most of the catastrophic breakdowns occur on ostensibly solid horses....You never know when....1990 Breeder's Cup at Belmont: who could have predicted Go For Wand or the charin reaction accident in the sprint when Mr. Nickerson (may have the name wrong) suffered an aortic aneurysm explosion taking down Shaker Knit with him......Or the animals who freaked on the way to the post and flipped on the way to the track

I've talked to several veterinarians, multiple relatives who are farriers, was invited into the paddock once, and will be visiting multiple breeding farms this April. As well as a few sales, I have already been to a few when I went to Saratoga. Anything else I have to prove you wrong about?

WRONG. The use of MRI and bone scans prior to racing can detect imbalances and cracks in the legs, feet and hoof. They're expensive but it is possible to detect such. There was an article in BloodHorse about it this summer.

All horses, HERE in Canada don't know about Calif (but I'll bet it is similar) go for necropsy and an ongoing total is kept at the track by the vets as regards the nature of the injuries.
