Firing Line won't even hit the board in the KY Derby! His pedigree is not strong for classic distances. He'll look like a million bucks at the top of the stretch and back up the last 2 furlongs. I'm not even sure who's going to be the favorite, but Im going against the top 3 and expect International Star to come from off of the pace to get at least a piece.
California Chrome has done nothing wrong except that he likes to run near the front. Hoppertunity has every right to move forward and Intense Holiday seems to have moved forward with his appearance on the Churchill surface. I agree with most of the horses on the list, but I have to throw Samraat out for the top slot, and General A Rod doesnt seem to instill any confidence in me. Danza is either something special of a complete fluke, only time will tell. Candy Boy was my choice early in the year and I still believe he could move forward on May 3rd. Ride on Curlin is my question mark. He hasn't put it all together yet, but if he does, watch out!!! Vicar's In Trouble doesn't have the pedigree or the running style to win the Derby. I think 2014 is the year of the California horses, just not the one who will be favored.
I don't think California Chrome has the right running style to win the Derby, but he could be so far out in front during the last furlong that he wins it geared down. I think Hopportunity has every right to improve again on Derby day, which makes him a contender, and Cairo Prince is still a monster talent to be afraid of. This Derby is interesting because of the pace scenario. How far back can Chrome stay so he's not scorched by the hot pace? Can he run from 5-6 lengths off with dirt kicking back into his face? Only time will tell, but he looms huge on the 1st Saturday in May
Finally! My girl gets back to the races! I fell in love with Rose To Gold at Keeneland in the 2012 season. Even though she didn't run well, she was beautiful! I've been following her ever since. I'm glad she's back, but sad that she will be retired soon.
Most of these so called Derby horses ran slow. Every year we hear how this horse or that horse won't win because of whatever reason, but they perform above and beyond.I'll be laughing in a month when some of the Nations experts come out with reasons why they had the horse, only days after saying that thaat same horse would not win...Its humorous
If you know anything about this years Derby crop, there hasn't been much to get excited about. Shanghai Bobby doesn't have the pedigree nor the running style to be there in the Derby. He's Had Enough looks like he's had enough, Vyjack??? Not likely. Verrazano runs 22.4 - 45.2 and then pulls away from the field and wins by 15 1/4? I loved his Maiden win, this one puts him at the top of my Derby list. If you weren't impressed you were either blind or do not know what kind of horse you are seeing.
Pay attention to trainer stats specifically at Del Mar also. There are a few angles that I use every year and they are especially valuable during the first week of the meet. Cant wait until this afternoon!
I've been to Del Mar 2 consecutive years from the East Coast and it is, by far the best track in America! We've been to Woodbine, Keeneland, Tampa and a ton of others but I will always go to Del Mar as my 1st choice
